Honorable Delegates of the Economic and Social Council,

The Mediterranean Sea is the point of no return for many of those who take a journey across deep waters seeking a stable and secure life. Irregular migration is an inevitable phenomenon which causes dramatic human loses, violations of fundamental human rights and puts all actors involved in a very trying position. To make it clear, the problem we’re going to tackle at the C-MIMUN 2018 requires hard work, dedication, understanding of current situation and knowledge of relevant norms of international law.

Although no ECOSOC member has the veto power, no state is obliged to obey to our resolutions, the committee has established the framework for nonpoliticised discussions, decision-making for the sake of humanity and raising problems of common concern. Will you become a part of it?

If you still wonder why the issue hasn’t been solved yet; if the number of deaths at sea triggers you, then I strongly encourage you to come! Let’s challenge ourselves by practicing truly effective diplomacy and addressing the problem with systematic approach! Let’s prove we are civilized and united nations! After all, let’s raise global awareness on the matter and enjoy the fruits of our efforts.

We hope the session will strengthen your belief in the power of international co-operation and help you realize that your contribution matters.

I’m looking forward to meeting you in April! This is going to be grand!

Sincerely yours,
Anastasia Gontar
ECOSOC Vice-President

Esteemed delegates! The Expert of the Economic and Social Council is welcoming you in one of the permanent and the most vital bodies of the UN!

Within its mandate, the ECOSOC deals with countless issues of the modern world, be it in humanitarian, economic, or financial area. But this year’s agenda is going to be especially burning, relevant, and controversial. Solving the European migrant crisis, and particularly its manifestation in the Mediterranean basin, which is going to be discussed, is one of the utmost priorities of today’s international community, as the whole Western system of universal values and standards is now at stake. It is our task during this session to promote global awareness on this issue – that is, to coordinate the efforts of all the stakeholders with a view to creating a new strategy and promoting the general understanding of the problem. There have already been numerous attempts to develop a comprehensive response to the crisis, but, as far as we can see, they are of little avail for the time being. Probably you are the ones to become the pioneers?

Taking into account the diversity of opinions on the matter among the countries, in the Mediterranean region also, I am empowered to assure you: a real diplomatic battle is awaiting you at this session. You will definitely need the whole arsenal of your negotiation skills, lateral thinking and oratorical competence.

I am looking forward to meeting you at the Model! Wish you to get maximum self-fulfillment from your participation!

Yours faithfully,
Gera Suvorov
Expert of the ECOSOC
