Dear delegates, there is a secret I want to share with you. When I was a little girl I used to make speeches in front of the mirror acting as the president of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Little girl with dreams. Could you imagine nine year old girl with ideas how to solve the world problems, how to handle the citizens or how to succeed in politics? Very funny and I would say frustrating for my mother. However, I have not become the president, but I haven’t stopped dreaming. That is what is keeping me alive and that is what should keep you alive. Dreams and ideas. I hope you will bring a lot of them in our committee! Our committee deals with sustainability and I am pretty sure you hear at least once per day this word SUSTAINABLE. It became like a buzzword in the society and as you may know, on September 25th 2015, UN member states adopted a set of goals to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure prosperity for all as part of a new sustainable development agenda. For the goals to be reached, everyone needs to do their part: governments, the private sector, civil society and people like YOU. ECOSOC exists to bring people and current issues, such as special economic, humanitarian and disaster relief assistance, together in order to promote collective action for a sustainable world. These issues we see around us every day and so far the responses by our agencies and our resolutions have mitigated many negative effects. However, there is a large space for improvement and that is the part when YOU step in! Read about these topics, inform yourself, think about them before going to sleep or talk to yourself in the mirror. You never know. Maybe you will be the one with great idea or solution that could actually change something and improve the work that has currently been done. I strongly believe in you. I believe in us, young people eager to fight, challenge and succeed. You see from my example. I may not become the president of my country, but being a president of this committee is a great honour as well. We start with small steps in our lives and only the stars are the limit.

I am looking forward to fruitful and constructive discussions as well as a lot of fun and new friendships.

Sincerely yours,
Mirheta Omerovic
President of the ECOSOC Committee

Honorable delegates,

The Co-Chairperson of the Economic and Social Council welcomes you! As a MGIMO student, as an experienced delegate and expert I am ready to assure you: the upcoming five days will definitely become a battlefield for intellectuals. The Russian language is no longer fashionable! The giants of the international arena dot the i's and cross the t's in the language of Margaret Thatcher. Even more: that is the charisma of Churchill, gesticulation of Che Guevara, Mona Lisa's smile you will need – otherwise the opposition destroys you before you have time to say "United Nations." Everything to be put in use: diplomatic correspondence, expressive glances, sarcastic remarks from the stands and from the audience. However, taking a look on the agenda I cannot help but mention that this is the committee for those who do not only pursue the goal to express themselves, but who seek making the world around us a better place to live in. And I am 100% sure we are going to do it. Together.

Everyone talks about the problem of the relief assistance. No one has found the way out yet. Will you give it a try?

Esteemed delegates! On behalf of the Expert of the Economic and Social Council I congratulate you on choosing our Committee!

“Let us recognize – we are one humanity and the shared responsibility,”- says Ban Ki-Moon, the UN Secretary-General (2007-2016). So let’s leave no one behind and discuss the problem coherently. Delivering special economic, humanitarian and disaster relief assistance will always be vital. Natural disasters will occur every day and people won't say "farewell to arms". Then it is we who should give an adequate response to this cruel reality. Do we put enough effort to overcome today's challenges? Are there any issues which haven't been solved yet? In our Committee, we are going to hold heated debates on the agenda operating with statistical proof data and checking whether we are ready to deliver sufficient aid to those who are in need. ECOSOC is for anyone who wishes to make their own contribution to humanity, world's development and prosperity.

It's time we all were on deck, distinguished delegates, so be prepared to share your knowledge, show your intelligence and concern. I am looking forward to reading your essays and meeting each of you via Skype. We are eager to start this ECOSOC session hoping to find the most reasonable solution!

Sincerely yours,
Anastasia Gontar
